Bangladesh's paramilitary border police seized nearly 16,000 one-day-old smuggled Indian chickens and set them ablaze out of fear of bird flu epidemic spreading from across the border, officials said Saturday.
The first consignment of over 10,000 Indian chickens was detected overnight as the truck transporting them arrived at the eastern frontier town of Comilla.
The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), the country's border guards, arrested three people, including the truck driver, for transporting the chickens defying a government ban on import of the Indian poultry.
The BDR soldiers also captured another truck carrying more than 5,700 Indian chickens close to the frontier town of Natore in northern Bangladesh late Friday, local police chief Matiur Rahman said.
Both consignments were torched after government magistrates approved the burning.
