By Ashwin, UK Correspondent,
The General Medical Council notes the decision made by the courts today in the case of Charlotte Wyatt. This is clearly a difficult situation for all the parties involved. Our guidance 'Withholding and Withdrawing Life-prolonging Treatments: Good Practice in Decision-Making' states that 'When there is disagreement between those with parental responsibility and the healthcare team and this cannot be resolved satisfactorily through informal review, you should seek legal advice about obtaining a ruling from the courts'. In this instance GMC is confident the proper procedures were followed in referring the case to the courts.
