GMC Plans New Rules on Doctors� Licences
The GMC Council at its next meeting in Edinburgh on September 20 is deciding whether to change the basis on which a doctor�s license to practise is approved in order to include the requirement to provide information which will support a more risk-based approach to regulation.

Results from attitude surveys commissioned by the GMC from MORI and NOP World during spring/summer 2005 show that over four out of five patients are confident in their doctor and that this confidence is directly correlated with the doctor�s ability to provide adequate information, underlining how much good communication skills influence the way in which the general public responds to their doctor.

GMC office to be opened in Cardiff
The General Medical Council is to open an office in Cardiff, it was announced today.
Speaking at the third annual GMC conference in Wales, President Sir Graeme Catto said �I am glad to be able to announce the opening of the new office. We are committed to improving our links with both the public and the profession, which is why we are opening this office in Cardiff.�

The case of Charlotte Wyatt
The General Medical Council notes the decision made by the courts today in the case of Charlotte Wyatt. This is clearly a difficult situation for all the parties involved. Our guidance 'Withholding and Withdrawing Life-prolonging Treatments: Good Practice in Decision-Making' states that 'When there is disagreement between those with parental responsibility and the healthcare team and this cannot be resolved satisfactorily through informal review, you should seek legal advice about obtaining a ruling from the courts'. In this instance GMC is confident the proper procedures were followed in referring the case to the courts.
