Swimming helps tremendously in enhancing the health and social well-being of children, says a study.

Researches conducted over six years at the Jigalong, Burringurrah and Mugarinya communities in western Australia's Pilbara region examined the impact on children's health where swimming pools were installed, reported ABC News online.

The Institute for Child Health Research study found that at least 44 percent of the children who studied at Jigalong had reduction in ear disease, 51 percent in skin disease and 63 percent in respiratory disorders after swimming.

"School attendance, self-esteem of children and their behaviour have improved," says institute director Fiona Stanley, who hinted that there were unexpected social benefits as well.
