A rapid assessment of the environmental damages caused by Tsunami has been commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and Forests by engaging nine specialized agencies in the country. The interim report received from the institutions indicates that there have been damages to coral reefs, mangroves, coastal forests, beaches and sand dunes. Studies also indicate salt water contamination in the drinking water wells in the coastal areas.
As per the information received from India Meteorological Department, no abnormalities in climate conditions have been observed so far in the coastal belt in the wake of Tsunami.
