[RxPG] New Delhi, May 15 - Charat Ram, a leading industrialist, philanthropist and member of one of the best-known business families in the capital, died Tuesday at the age of 89, family sources said.
Charat Ram was the president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry - during 1973-74.
'Dr. Charat Ram was a beacon of light for businesspersons in India, one who was dedicated to the cause of both business and its responsibility towards society,' FICCI president Habib Khorakiwala said in a statement.
The chamber described him as a visionary and an outstanding business leader.
'During his tenure as the chamber president, Dr. Charat Ram, maintained that economic growth had to be so directed as to lead to larger employment opportunities and bringing down disparities in income,' he added.
'In Dr. Charat Ram, we have lost a doyen of the Indian Industry, noted for his business acumen, simplicity of lifestyle and respected by compatriots,' the Confederation of Indian Industry - said.
