New Delhi, May 7 - President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Monday asked corporate and industrial houses to adopt schools, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, and provide them infrastructure facilities.
'We need creative leaders who can exercise the vision to change the traditional role from the commander to the coach, manager to mentor, from director to delegator and from one who demands respect to one who facilitates self-respect,' he said.
Giving away the corporate social responsibility awards for 2006 by Businessworld, Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry - and Social Economic Development Foundation -, he said the rapid growth of the private sector in the country had made education an important part of corporate responsibility as much as the government.
According to the president, education with value system has to be so designed that the righteousness in the heart is developed in young minds. That should be the mission of education.
On infrastructure, he said this should be in the form of clean drinking water, toilet facilities, transportation facilities for children coming from far away places, equipping sport complexes and providing computing facilities for technology assisted learning.
Besides, the president said corporate houses could arrange special lectures for children to imbibe value-based education. This type of support to government schools and private schools will improve the quality of education to the children in the rural and semi-urban areas, leading to development of enlightened citizens.
Recalling his Republic Day address to the nation, the president said the corporate sector must reach the 'unreached' as an essential component of Corporate Social Responsibility.
The top Corporate Citizen Award was bagged by the Steel Authority of India Ltd. -, with Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd. - and Tata Chemicals Ltd bagging second and third place respectively.
Zensar Technologies Ltd. received the Jury's Special Commendation Award and certificates of appreciation were given to National Thermal Power Corporation -, HSBC Ltd. and Hindustan Zinc Ltd.
