[RxPG] New Delhi, May 3 - A day before the expiry of the statutory 90-days deadline for seeking review of its Feb 5 order on allocation of the river waters to the four riparian states, Karnataka and Kerala Monday approached the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal to seek 'some clarification' of the order.
The two states approached the tribunal within days after Tamil Nadu, which was allocated the largest share of the river water, approached it April 27 seeking an additional allocation of 60 thousand million cubic ft - of water as its share, over and above 419 tmcft allocated to it.
The Counsel for Karrtnataka government Mohan Katarki Pudducherry too filed its clarification application to the tribunal last week.
With the four riparian states seeking clarification or the review of the tribunal award, the union government will not be able to issue the notification to implement the tribunal's order, said Katarki.
The tribunal will have to adjudicate all the applications by four states within a period of one year, pending which the government will not be able to issue the notification to implement the tribunal order, he added.
Seeking to resolve a water-sharing dispute that soured relations among the four Cauvery riparian states for over a century, the tribunal had allocated 419 tmcft to Tamil Nadu, 270 tmcft to Karnataka while giving neighbouring Karnataka 270 tmcft, 30 tmcft to Kerala and 7 tmcft to Pudduicherry.
The verdict was the result of the tribunal's protracted proceeding for 17 years, during which it held 577 sittings to reach an amicable solution on the dispute.
