Microsoft India Development Centre develops virtual PC

[RxPG] Hyderabad, March 15 - Microsoft India Development Centre - here has developed Microsoft virtual PC 2007, which allows multiple operating systems to run at the same time on the same physical computer.
The windows group team at MIDC, excited over the enormous response the product has got since its launch Feb 19, is working on the next version of client virtualisation and server virtualisation.
Sharing the details of the product with the media, Srini Koppolu, vice-president and managing director, MIDC, said 450,000 free downloads were registered in the first week after the launch.
The product is available for free download and will continue to be free software. 'It is a strategic technology for the company and not meant for specific revenues,' Koppolu said while pointing out that product support only Microsoft operating systems.
A 20-member team developed this product, the latest in a series of major products shipped by MIDC in the last 18 months.
The product provides a time saving and cost saving solution anywhere users run multiple operating systems. 'It is of immense help to enterprises using multiple operating systems. This saves space, time and cost without disrupting Windows environment,' said Koppolu.
He said the virtualisation would be a key opportunity in the next three to five years. According to a study, the number of machines with virtualisation would increase to one million in 2009 from 135,000 in 2004. The industry spending on virtualisation is expected to go up from $1.5 billion in 2004 to $5.3 billion in 2009.

Virtual PC 2007 is optimised for Windows Vista. This allows business customers to migrate to Windows Vista for a more secure and manageable experience, while keeping a previous Windows environment available to run legacy or custom applications in a virtual setting.
