Nasscom to set up data security body for IT firms

New Delhi, April 23 - In a move to showcase India as the leader in IT best practices, the National Association for Software and Services Companies -, a leading Indian information technology industry lobby, is to establish an independent body to push the industry to follow stringent data security laws.
The body, named Self Regulatory Organisation -, would act as watchdog for several leading, small and medium IT and ITES - companies with the objective of portraying India as not only cost-effective but also a secured and credible destination for outsourcing.
'As the Indian industry is growing rapidly, securing client-sensitive data has become imperative. The self-regulatory organisation would ensure that proper security measures are being adhered to by the Indian companies and they would push for it so that more and more companies participate in it,' Kiran Karnik, president, Nasscom, told a press conference here.
Companies would need to enrol themselves into the organisation as members, for which there would be specific guidelines that the firms would have to meet. Nasscom is yet to decide on the eligibility criteria.
The companies would also be provided accreditation of adhering to security guidelines.
According to Karnik, clients, especially the overseas ones, would have more faith and feel comfortable to do business with accredited companies, which in turn would induce others to become members of the SRO.
'Data security and privacy still remain the prime concern areas for companies all over the world. This initiative by Nasscom will help showcase India as the leader in IT best practices letting the country set standards for itself and for the world,' said Shyamal Ghosh, chairman, SRO.
Among other security initiatives, Nasscom had set up the National Skills Registry - last year in 2006, which acts as a centralised database of employees of the IT and BPO companies, the registration for which has reached a whopping 100,000. It is expected to go up to 500,000 this year.
The body has also set up cyber labs and cyber crime training centres in Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Thane - where over 2,000 police personnel have undergone training on cyber crime and how to handle such cases. One such training centre would also be opened up soon in Chandigarh in collaboration with the Punjab University.
