[RxPG] New Delhi, May 16 - India's new Communications and IT Minister A.Raja Wednesday promised to look into doing away with roaming charges for mobile phone users which was on the agenda of his predecessor Dayanidhi Maran.
Raja, who took charge of the new portfolio Wednesday, also said the focus of his policies will be rural telephony and attracting more foreign direct investment - into the telecom and IT sectors.
'Top priority would be given on rural telephony. I don't feel that inspite of investments by all my predecessors it has not reached the lowest level -,' Raja told reporters here.
'I will look into this' the new minister replied when asked about the proposal to abolish roaming charges so that the subscriber base and penetration level of telecom services grow beyond the current 18 percent.
India today ranks among a handful of countries that have more than 200 million telecom subscribers both in fixed line and mobile.
Raja, who was previously the minister in charge of environment and forest, also said the communication and IT industries needed fresh doses of investment, especially from the private sector.
'I have to also see how we can attract more foreign investments and how it can be done.'
