[RxPG] New Delhi, Jan 9 - The use of technology has been a key driver in India's development and can be used to solve problems in sectors like education, water and health, experts told the fifth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Tuesday.
'Technology has played a very important role in recent history. There are many who feel technology is intimidating and abuse it, but the fact is everyone uses technology,' said Sam Pitroda, chairman of the National Knowledge Commission.
India has come a long way from the days when getting a telephone connection would take years. Today it is regarded as a leader in IT globally because of its ability to use technology, the experts opined.
'We today take technology for granted as it has become all pervasive. The development of great academic institutions like IITs and IIMs have happened due to technology,' Pitroda told a session 'Leveraging Technology for Development'.
'Today all these ... would not have existed if there was no technology. India today is recognised the world over as an IT leader due to its ability to leverage technology,' he noted.
'However, now we have to leverage technology for the benefit of the 400 million who are below the poverty line.'
Said Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman and managing director of Bharti Enterprises: 'Technology intervention is very important for the development of agriculture.
'Our agriculture will contribute significantly to the country's GDP - if it gets the support of technology.'
