Videocon plans semiconductor lab in West Bengal

[RxPG] Kolkata, April 13 - The Videocon Group Friday announced plans to set up two Special Economic Zones - in the state as well as a fabrication laboratory for semiconductor technology near Kolkata in West Bengal.
'Since the West Bengal government's offer is good we are considering this state as a viable option,' said Videocon Group chairman Venugopal Dhoot, who met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya at the state secretariat Writers' Building late Friday evening.
Andhra Pradesh government has also offered the company space in Hyderabad to set up the project, he said.
The fabrication centre would be developed with an initial investment of Rs.10 billion, which may go up further if the project is taken up in phases, Dhoot said.
'Videocon has asked for around 100 acres of land near Kolkata for the semiconductor and fabrication complex,' he said.
The Videocon group plans to set up two SEZs in the state - one at Dabagram in Jalpaiguri district and another at Guptamani near Kharagpur.
'The SEZ at Dabgram would be set up over state government housing department land and there would not be any land acquisition problems,' the chief minister said.
The SEZ would provide employment to 1,000 people.
'The SEZ at Guptamani has been planned over 1,000 hectares. Videocon has already received central government approval for the SEZ,' Bhattacharya said.
Dhoot said that Videocon would set up an IT tower at Salt Lake, which would generate employment for 30,000 people.
