Aligarh, April 26 - Tension prevailed in the Aligarh Muslim University here Thursday as irate students attacked the university registrar's residence, a day after an engineering student was killed on the university campus.

Late Wednesday evening, unidentified assailants on motorcycles shot dead Qausar Faliq, a B. Tech final year student who was studying at the university's chemical engineering department.

As news of the killing spread, a group of students allegedly assaulted university proctor Akhlaq Ahmed, who had to be hospitalised late Wednesday. Ahmed, however, was discharged from hospital Thursday morning.

Acting vice chancellor M. Salimuddin is also missing, sources said.

Meanwhile, police Thursday claimed to have recovered the motorcycle and a bag used by the assailants who had killed Faliq.

Earlier this month, vice chancellor Nasim Ahmed had resigned from his post after an undergraduate student was killed in a shootout between rival groups following a scuffle.

Since then the functioning of the university was affected as the final exams had to be postponed amid continued student agitation on the campus.
