New Delhi, May 3 - The Delhi High Court Thursday directed the state government to fill up about 15,000 vacancies for teachers in various government-run schools in the capital before the start of the next academic session in July.
While disposing of a petition filed by Social Jurist, a voluntary organisation, Justice S. Murlidhar directed the authorities to recruit teachers for the schools as studies of thousands of students were affected.
The court had earlier formed a committee comprising the chairman of Delhi Staff Selection Board's - and additional directors of the Directorate of Education's - and Municipal Corporation of Delhi - to initiate steps to fill up the vacancies.
Advocate Ashok Agrawal appearing for Social Jurist said that there are about 10,000 vacancies in Delhi government and 5,000 in MCD schools for the past several months.
About 400,000 students in the capital were deprived of receiving proper education due to lack of teachers, said Agarwal.
