IIMs to decide on admission soon

[RxPG] Ahmedabad, April 23 - The Indian Institutes of Management - Monday said they would take a decision on the admission process at the earliest now that there was some 'clarity' after the Supreme Court rejected the government's plea to vacate the stay on a law providing for quota in higher education.
'There was some lack of clarity earlier. Now that it's clear, action will follow soon,' IIM-Ahmedabad Director Bakul H. Dholakia said.
'After a consensus, we had planned to release the first admission list on April 21 but did not do so after the government communication reached us April 19.
'Now that clarity has emerged, we - will discus among us and talk to the HRD ministry before giving a definite answer,' Dholakia told reporters here.
The Supreme Court Monday dismissed the government's petition seeking vacation of the stay on the law providing for 27 percent reservations for other backward classes - in centrally funded higher educational institutions.
A bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and L.S. Panta dismissed the plea and said: 'We are not inclined to vary our March 29 order' - which suspended the law for caste-based quotas citing the lack of updated census data for the community.
In a stinging remark, the bench observed, 'You - frame the rule and then play the game. But here you are playing the game first and then framing the rule.'
The stay had created uncertainty over the admission process for the next academic year. The court will now take up the matter only in August.
Taking a no-confrontation stand with the HRD ministry, Dholakia said: 'Everyone is interested in the welfare of students. Everyone is interested in the smooth conduct of post-graduation education. All the stakeholders are agreed on it.'
Two days before the first admission list of the six IIMs was to be declared, the HRD ministry on April 19 warned the premier business schools against any 'unilateral' decision until the quota issue was resolved.
