[RxPG] Patna, March 29 - Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, friends-turned-foes known to disagree on most things, found themselves in agreement as both called for a consensus on the fresh quota policy after the Supreme Court Thursday granted a stay on it.
'We strongly feel that only a consensus could bring about the solution to this problem. There is nothing to worry, the UPA - is for implementation of social justice for backward classes,' Lalu Prasad told newspersons here.
He was reacting to the Supreme Court's stay till August on the 27 percent reservation for other backward class - students in higher educational institutes like the IIMs and IITs.
'I will talk to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on the issue,' Lalu Prasad said.
Nitish Kumar said: 'The prime minister should call an all-party meeting without losing time to resolve the issue. The backward classes deserve the reservation in elite educational institutions.'
While the apex court's stay came after the petitioner pointed out that the policy was based on archaic census data on the OBCs, Nitish Kumar said that since the next census was schedule in 2011 the central government should call a meeting and solve this problem as there was a sense of uneasiness among the OBCs.
