[RxPG] New Delhi, March 13 - MPs from West Bengal and Tamil Nadu resorted to blows in the Lok Sabha Tuesday over the issue of establishing a maritime university in Chennai.
The parliamentarians pushed and pulled each other as Shipping Minister T.R. Baalu stood up to introduce a bill to establish the Indian Maritime University in Chennai.
The lower house was adjourned twice as MPs from West Bengal aggressively protested the introduction of the bill, saying that the government should turn the existing maritime institute in Kolkata to a university instead of having a new one in Chennai.
The government had proposed a new university in Chennai, under which the Kolkata institute could operate.
As Baalu got up to introduce the bill at 12 noon, MPs from Kolkata, led by senior Communist Party of India-Marxist - leaders Anil Basu, Shameet Lahiri and Amitabh Nandi rushed towards the speaker's podium protesting the move. As the situation turned chaotic, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee adjourned the house till 12.15 p.m.
But when the house met again, CPI-M members shouted that they would not allow the introduction to proceed and ran towards Baalu in anger. Minister of State for Finance Palani Manikkam ran forward and pushed Anil Basu. With the situation turning violent, Chatterjee adjourned the house till 1 p.m.
