Over 27,000 rescued child labours put in schools

[RxPG] New Delhi, March 14 - A total of 27,235 child labour, rescued in 2006-07 were put in mainstream education, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes said Wednesday.
These include 13,479 children in the age group of five to eight years who have been mainstreamed in government schools. Another 13,756 rescued child labourers in the age group of nine to 13 years were mainstreamed from Transitional Education Centres - to formal schooling system, Fernandes informed the Rajya Sabha.
So far, 42,888 children have been enrolled in the TECs. Besides, 11,909 adolescents have been enrolled in vocational training programmes.
According to the 2001 Census, India is home to 12.6 million child labourers, with Uttar Pradesh topping the chart with 1,927,997. Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are the next most child labourer populated states with 1,363,339 and 1,117,500 kids working below the legal age of 14.

The Indus Project is being implemented in 21 districts of 5 States of Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
