Police use fictitious name to aid sex workers' kids

[RxPG] Patna, April 11 - Policemen in a Bihar town conjured up a fictional character, Roopchand, for a noble cause. The non-existing man was registered as the father of 35 children of sex workers to ensure their admission to school.
A few days ago, the police at Sasaram town in Rohtas district, about 250 km from here, enrolled about 50 sex workers' children in a government school.
But a local Hindi newspaper wondered how the names of the fathers of 35 children could be the same: Roopchand.
The decision to help the kids was part of the Bihar government's move to educate the poor street children across the state.
When the police raided Sasaram's Barda red light area near the busy Grand Trunk Road last week, it found that the children of the sex workers had never been to school.
'The police approached a school and ensured their admission. In the school's official records, Roopchand was named as the father of 35 of them,' a district education official said.
'We used this name - to admit them to school. It is no doubt a fictitious name but what is wrong with it if it serves a good cause?' asked a police official of Sasaram, speaking to IANS.
But the police are facing some trouble now because the school authorities want to correct the obvious mistake of 35 kids having a collective father.
'We have been trying to solve this complicated problem,' a police official admitted.
At the same time, the police are requesting the school not to cancel the admission of these underprivileged kids - just over a name.
