Supreme Court of India sought information about numbers of All India Medical Post Graduate (PG) Seats

[RxPG] A Bench comprising Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice P P Naolekar issued an order to direct the Chief Secretaries of the States and Union Territories to give details to Directorate General of Health Services by February 25. Supreme Court also posted the matter for next hearing on February 28, 2005.
The petition stated that States were manipulating allotment of seats in the All India Quota Scheme. Last year the total seats in All India Quota were increased from 25 per cent to 50 per cent of the total available PG course seats in Medical colleges. The main contention of the petition was that the States were calculating 50 per cent of the seats after setting aside a number of them for reserved category students defeating the purpose of the all India Quota scheme. It alleged that under the 25 per cent scheme, a total of 1441 PG seats were available for the All India Quota, but under 50 per cent a total of 1553 seats only were made available.
In response to a petition filed by Budhi Prakash Sharma, the Supreme Court of India today directed all States and Union Territories to give exact information of the number of seats available for Post Graduate courses in various medical colleges under the 50 per cent All India Quota for All India PG Entrance Examination conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences on 9 January 2005.
