[RxPG] New Delhi, March 24 - India's border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal -, which is responsible for manning borders with neighbours Bhutan and Nepal, plans to link all border outposts with satellites to upgrade its intelligence and surveillance mechanism in the border areas.
The force has a total of 582 border outposts, of which 314 are with the Nepal border and the rest are with Bhutan.
'We would soon be able to link all the border outposts with the satellite to upgrade our intelligence and surveillance mechanism in the border areas,' SSB Director General Tilak Kak said here Saturday.
'Out of 41 battalions in the force, 19 already enjoy this service, while the rest would be linked and upgraded in a phased manner. The process of linking the outposts along the border has already started,' he added.
The upgraded state-of-the-art system includes video conferencing, remote sensing surveillance systems, satellite phones and computerization of the posts.
'With this system, we would be able to keep a check on all the activities of suspected elements and can also directly communicate with our troopers from anywhere,' Kak said.
'As both Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders are open and porous and no documents are required to cross the border, a need of special skills was felt to guard the borders,' he added.
The central paramilitary force, which was set up in 1963 as a Special Service Bureau after Indo-China conflict, currently guards 1,751 kilometres along the Indo-Nepal border and 699 kilometres along the India-Bhutan border.
