[RxPG] Srinagar, May 18 - A high velocity gale hit the Kashmir Valley late Friday evening, disrupting life as it uprooted trees and snapped power lines.

Around 250 tourists enjoying boat rides in the world famous Dal Lake were stranded and state police and fire services personnel were pressed into service to rescue them. Motorboats made several sorties in the highly choppy lake to ferry the stranded tourists to safety.

The high velocity winds led to snapping of power supply in the entire valley which could not be restored till late in the night.

'It will take us several days to completely repair the damage and restore normal power supply. We are trying to immediately restore power to essential feeders supplying power to important installations including hospitals,' Nissar Hussain, chief engineer power, told IANS here.

The Srinagar Muzaffarabad road was closed for traffic this evening as the fallen trees blocked it at several points.

'The loss is yet to be assessed and it will take sometime to compute the damage caused by the sudden gale,' a senior officer said.

The accompanying rain, however, led to a drop in the temperature which had touched 30 degrees Celsius Friday.

However, no loss of life was reported from anywhere.
