Court directs repairing of Delhi roads

[RxPG] New Delhi, May 11 - The pitiable conditions of many roads in the capital with their mushrooming bumps and potholes has caught the attention of the Delhi High Court, prompting it Friday to order the Delhi government to have them repaired within five months.
A division bench of Chief Justice M.K. Sarma and Justice R.S. Sodhi directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi -, the New Delhi Municipal Council - and the Public Works Department - to file a status report by Sep 30 after repairing all the roads in the capital.
'Many of these roads require immediate repair. Conditions of the roads are very bad. File a status report after repairing them,' said the bench while reacting to a report submitted by the court commissioner Pushkar Sood during the hearing of a public suit filed by Hemnalini Mehra for traffic regulation in the capital.
Sood submitted that many of the roads in the capital were in a bad shape and people were facing lot of difficulties.
The court also directed the central government to evolve a mechanism to computerise and connect the transport authorities all over the country to check the fraudulent issuance of driving licenses.
'Computerise and centralise the licensing authorities in the country, so that the erring drivers are not able to get another license from another state after committing accidents in the capital,' the bench said.
After the driving license of a person was confiscated he got a fresh one from Nagaland, observed the bench saying such malpractices would not be possible once the licensing departments are computerised and interconnected.

The court also asked the civic authorities to remove all automobile repair workshops from the footpaths of the capital after Sood pointed out that they mushroomed alongside roads in many areas often encroaching upon them and causing inconvenience to road users.
