[RxPG] Madurai -, May 10 - Madurai Mayor Thenmozhi's husband was arrested along with three members of the ruling DMK Thursday, a day after a mob set on fire the Dinakaran newspaper office leading to three staffers being killed.
The action followed the outcry and demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation - inquiry into the incident, prompted by the newspaper publishing a poll favouring Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's younger son Stalin over the elder Azhagiri as his political heir.
All the DMK functionaries arrested were Azhagiri supporters.
The temple town and neighbouring regions that had seen violence and arson Wednesday by factions of the ruling DMK were quiet Thursday with the government stepping up security in the district.
Police guard was also provided at the Dinakaran offices in Madurai and Chennai.
Police had arrested three dozen people late Wednesday for the acts or arson, roadblocks, destruction of public property, including state transport buses, and private vehicles from several districts Wednesday night.
Amongst those arrested was Azhagiri supporter and local goon Tiger Pandi.
The Azhagiri supporters who attacked the Dinakaran office, owned by the Sun Group, were led by the mayor.
The Dinakaran has filed a police complaint and has demanded the arrest of Azhagiri, a powerbroker in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
