[RxPG] Chandigarh, May 7 - Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Monday directed the state's legal officials to take immediate steps to stall the 'illegal' construction of the Hansi-Butana multi-purpose link canal in Haryana.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had recently announced that the construction of the 109-km long canal would be started.

The new canal is proposed to take water from the Bhakra mainline canal to the adjoining Western Yamuna canal in Haryana. The Bhakra mainline canal carries water from Punjab to areas adjoining Haryana and Rajasthan.

Badal said his government was committed to take legal recourse through the Supreme Court against the new canal in Haryana.

He said Haryana government's action of constructing the canal was totally unjustified and unlawful as it had not sought permission from the Central Water Commission - and the Bhakra Beas Management Board -.

Badal added that Haryana had also not sought the mandatory approval from the central ministries of water resources, environment and forests before starting construction.
