'Now that the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are over, I have decided to resign from the Congress and inform the people, my community and my political friends of where I stand,' he added.

[RxPG] New Delhi, May 10 - Syed Shahabuddin Thursday announced that he has quit the Congress party.
In a statement the noted Muslim leader said: 'On the eve of the 2004 general elections I felt the inner urge to re-enter the political arena to participate in the epic battle against the resurgent forces of communalism. So, on April 4, 2004, I voluntarily and unconditionally joined the Congress and canvassed for it to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party -.'
'Three years later I realised I had lost my freedom and felt shackled in reacting to political developments. So, on March 29, 2007, I wrote to 'Soniaji' - seeking her permission to dissociate myself from the party in order to regain my freedom of expression. I received no response,' Shahabuddin said.
'Now that the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are over, I have decided to resign from the Congress and inform the people, my community and my political friends of where I stand,' he added.
Shahabuddin, a career diplomat who served the Indian Foreign Service in the late 1970s, joined politics at the suggestion of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then external affairs minister in the Janata Party led government.
