[RxPG] Ranchi, May 15 - A divided ruling United Progressive Alliance - and opposition National Democratic Alliance - in Jharkhand will contest the Daltonganj assembly by-election in the state to be held next month.
Rift has appeared in the UPA as its three alliance partners - the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party - and All Jharkhand Students Party - - have fielded their respective candidates for the by-poll.
The alliance that was formed in September 2006, has, however, fought two Lok Sabha by-elections together so far, winning the Palamau by-poll in March this year but failed in Koderma in November 2006.
'NCP has a large number of followers in Dalatonganj and we decided to fight the election to defeat NDA,' said Kamlesh Singh, state Irrigation Minister and a NCP leader, here Monday.
Singh has fielded his brother Binu Singh in the by-election.
Chief Minister Madhu Koda finds himself in a catch 22 situation. 'All are close to me. I will remain neutral in the election,' said Koda while reacting to the decision of UPA partners to fight the election.
The NDA is disappointed as its major partner Bharatiya Janata Party - lost the two recent Lok Sabha byelections. In both the bypolls, the BJP came third.
Janata Dal-United - has fielded Neelu Mishra, a former BJP member after it failed to get suitable candidate.
Another strong candidate, former assembly speaker Inder Singh Namdhari has vacated the assembly seat over differences with party leaders. Namdhari was a JD-U legislator from Daltonganj.
