Antarctic treaty meet to focus on human intervention

[RxPG] New Delhi, April 29 - The 30th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting - beginning in New Delhi Monday will deliberate on the impact of human intervention and climate change on the continent.
Being held for the first time in India since its inception on Dec 1, 1959, the meeting will be attended by around 300 delegates, comprising scientists, experts from governmental and non-governmental organisations from more that 45 countries.
The critical issues before the ATCM 2007 are environmental impacts of human activities on the sensitive ecosystem of Antarctica, especially related to the increasing ship-born tourism activities.
According to the India ministry of earth sciences, enhancing international science cooperation and collaborative research, especially during the International Polar Year -, will be another key area for discussions in this convention.
India would also seek the permission from the ATCM to set up its third research base at Antarctica. India has two research bases but the first one, Dakshin Gangotri, is completely non-functional as it is now buried under ice. At least 20 scientists are working in India's second station, Maitry.
