Chandigarh, May 10 - The hopes of having a mass rapid transport system - project for Chandigarh has been revived with the Chandigarh administration Thursday constituting a 10-member committee to review an earlier report submitted on the project.
The new committee will be headed by New Delhi's Centre for Policy Research chairman K.C. Sivaramakrishnan. Other members include specialists from the field of transport, planning and architecture.
The committee would review the report submitted by public sector engineering consultant and project manager RITES last year on MRTS for the city. It will submit its report within 90 days.
The RITES report had been rejected by the central government on the ground that the MRTS proposal was too expensive for the city.
Chandigarh presently has nearly 700,000 registered vehicles for a population of just over one million.
The city presently does not have a comprehensive public transport system. The only public transport available is government-run buses and private taxis.
The committee will now suggest the best-suited mode of public transport for the city including metro and monorail.
