Electricity consumer receives Rs 2.34 bn shock
Apr 8, 2007 - 4:36:16 PM

Chandigarh, April 8 - An electricity consumer in Haryana has got a shocker heavier than the electric jolt. He has been asked to cough up a bill of Rs 2.34 bn - for the electricity used in his two-bedroom middle-income group house.

Murari Lal of Narnaul town did not, however, faint on seeing the bill that his even seven generations would not be able to pay.

'It was shocking to receive such a bill', he said as he headed to get the 'mistake' in the bill rectified.

The state's power distribution agency's executive engineer said that the high bill went to the consumer due to a snag in the spot bill machine.

'We are getting the spot billing machine software rectified,' the engineer said.

But Murari Lal's woes will end only after the phenomenal bill is withdrawn and the actual bill is dispatched to him.

The penalty for non-payment of the bill by the April 18 deadline itself runs to over Rs 700 million.
