Nurture creative leaders for growth: Kalam

New Delhi, May 11 - For a prosperous and developed India, it is imperative to nurture creative leaders, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said Friday.

'The important thrust will be on the growth in the number of creative leaders in every laboratory, institution, every industry, every department and finally every organisation,' he said at a function to mark the national technology day.

The president said the day 'reminds us of our resolve to achieve self-reliance in indigenous technologies needed for societal transformation'.

He suggested that the industries take up concept-to-completion programme based on their core competence for producing goods and services, resulting in large impact both nationally and internationally. That is how science and technology can lead to higher level of competitiveness in the industry, he said.

The president also gave away national awards. Elpro Energy Dimensions got the Small Scale Industries - Unit Award for successfully commercialising a product based on technology developed by Indian scientists.

The other winner in this category was Diaonics Automation Pvt Ltd for designing and developing the state-of-the art wireless digital addressable fire detection cum prevention system with centralised monitoring station.

The winners in the other categories are: Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Park at Basaveshwar Engineering College Bagalkot, Karnataka; Jatinder Kaur Arora of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh; Maninder Jeet Kaur of Himalayan Research Group, Shimla; O.P. Katare, professor and chairperson of the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Punjab University, Chandigarh; Virender Singh Sangwan, associate director of the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, and Geeta K. Vemuganti, director of Ophthalmic Pathologic Serviced and head of Stem Cell Laboratory at the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute.
