Antony felicitates army's Asian Games medallists

New Delhi, Jan 16 - Defence Minister A.K. Antony Tuesday felicitated 22 Indian Army personnel who won laurels for the country at last month's Doha Asian Games.
Indian Army chief Gen. J.J. Singh separately presented cheques to the medal winners. Gold medal winners received Rs.100,000 each, silver medallists received Rs.75,000 and bronze medalists Rs.50,000.
Sportspersons from different regiments of the Indian Army bagged 15 medals - two gold, four silver and nine bronze - of the country's tally of 54.
Ace shooter Naib Subedar Vijay Kumar, winner of the team gold Medal in the 25 meter centre fire pistol along with Jaspal Rana, as also Naib Subedar Vikash Kumar and Naib Subedar Sukhbir Singh, the members of the gold winning kabbadi team, were among those felicitated by the defence minister.
Havildar Aboobacker Thannikal, a member of the silver winning 4x400 meters relay team; Havildar Bajrang Lal, winner of an individual silver in rowing; Sub Jenil Krishnan, Hav Sukhjeet Singh, Havildar D. Sangwan and Havildar Satish Joshi, members of the Indian team that won the silver in the coxless four rowing event; and Lt. Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who won a silver in the double trap team shooting event, were also felicitated.
The army contingent comprised 48 athletes and took part in 14 disciplines.
'The army sportsperson improved their performance in many disciplines including shooting, archery, rowing, boxing and wrestling in the 2006 Asian Games over the 2002 Games held at Busan,' a defence ministry release said.
Antony hoped the army would put up a better show at the forthcoming Military World Games to be hosted by India.
The mega event will be held at Hyderabad and Mumbai in October. These games will be the biggest sporting event to be held in India. More than 6,000 participants will represent over 100 countries in 15 disciplines.
