New Delhi, April 5 - S.S.P. Chowrasia carded a bogey-free nine-under-par, 63 to tie the course record and take the lead after the first round of the inaugural Rs.6 million AIS Golf Open, which started at the Delhi Golf Club here Thursday.
Chowrasia carded birdies on the first, third, fourth and fifth holes to make the turn at four-under-par, 32 and equalled the course record, previously held by Myanmar's Zaw Moe and Sri Lankan Anura Rohana.
'Everything just clicked today and I putted very well. I took three weeks off from the tour and that seems to have really helped my game,' said Chowrasia.
Gaurav Ghei and Vinod Kumar were tied for second place with identical scores of five-under-par, 67.
Gaurav started the day brilliantly with birdies on the third, fourth and sixth holes to get to three-under for the day.
However, two bogies, on the par-three seventh where he hit his ball into the bunker and had to play out of a plugged lie and the par-four ninth hole where he hit his second shot into the left bush, saw him make the turn at one-under-par, 35.
A good par on the 10th after hitting the right rough where he was stuck behind a tree got Gaurav going. He chipped his ball out and made a chip and putt for par from 50 yards.
'I had a good start to my round and finished the day with four birdies in the last five holes. My putting really helped today and it was a good scoring day as there was no wind. Anyone who gets going today can take the course apart,' he said.
Ashok Kumar carded a bogey-free 68 with birdies on the second, eighth, 14th and the 16th holes and was tied for fourth place alongside Gurki Shergill, C. Muniyappa, Craig McLean and Shiv Prakash.
Meanwhile, Jyoti Randhawa carded a level-par 72, while Shiv Kapur shot one-over-par 73.
'I was two-under-par with three to play but bogeyed the 16th and made a double bogey on the 17th to finish at one-over-par,' said Kapur.
