[RxPG] From 1 April 2005 the General Medical Council will be introducing pre-registration identity checks for all doctors who are EEA or Swiss nationals and for doctors who are exercising an EC right.

Identity checking is being introduced in response to the UKs growing problem with identity theft. It is just one of many initiatives the GMC is undertaking to improve the rigour of registration processes.

Doctors will have to complete the following steps:

* Make a personal visit to the GMCs offices in London with their passport.
* Details from their passport will be taken and retained.
* A digital photograph will be taken of the doctor for GMC records.

The photograph will be made available to employers so that they can be assured of the doctors identity when they start work.
